Today was the start of a brand new semester, my second year in the Master's program at the University of  Florida in the field of Religion and Nature. I woke up this morning with a renewed sense of desire, accomplishment and excitement for the limitless possibilities of learning and growth.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And all this began with a personal yoga practice to this playlist below. My new semester resolutions are not only to read all the required texts, do my best, and wear my bike helmet and Road ID while bicycling around Gainesville, but to wake up every morning with a renewed sense of gratitude for this life, for all the potential it holds and flowing to these songs. Bending your knees, and placing your heels in as close to the seat as possible. Knees and feet are both hip distance apart and parallel forward.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A&lt;a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_xBTlzuNB2ek/TFCPeeMoVCI/AAAAAAAAAEw/c3keDBFGnz0/s1600/IMG_3572.JPG"&gt;&lt;img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 238px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_xBTlzuNB2ek/TFCPeeMoVCI/AAAAAAAAAEw/c3keDBFGnz0/s320/IMG_3572.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499052898684261410" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2) To warm up the spine, hold "Bridge" pose, or &lt;span style="font-weight:bold;"&gt;Setu Bandhasana&lt;/span&gt; for five breaths (See photo A). As you inhale, lift the lower, middle, and upper back off of the mat; either interlacing your fingers underneath you, rolling higher onto the shoulders; or place a block on any one of its three heights under your sacrum. (see photos B, C, D) Hold for 5 breaths. I was attending a week-long Fluid Power teacher training with Shiva Rea. It is amazing what a trip out of the 'usual grind' can do for one's soul, while surrounded by other like-minded inspirational individuals.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This was my third TT (teacher training) with Shiva, and it was truly amazing being reunited with fellow Prana Flow friends that I had met at previous trainings. As well as being introduced to more folks on this Blessed Path of Life and Love. I am truly grateful for you all!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There were a few moments that struck me as 'breakthroughs' in my own practice in both mind and body that I would like to share...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;During our week we had a meditation practice from 6:30-7:30 every morning. In my traditional exposure to meditation I was always under the impression that this must occur while seated still. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1) Find a Seat. &lt;br /&gt;2) Be Still. &lt;br /&gt;3) Breathe. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Those were the three steps that I thought had to occur in order to truly 'meditate'. Although, during our first meditation practice, Shiva invited us to allow simple sways of the body with the breath while seated. This may seem very simple, but during this practice, I had a 'yogic light bulb' go off (as I like to call it!). It made so much sense allowing the body to move with the breath and not feeling so rigid.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In 2006, while I was studying in India for six months, my first 'yogic light bulb' went off when I was meditating in Cleft Cave during a 40 hour solo towards the three month mark of our program. It occurred to me that meditation does not have to only happen while seated in Padmasana (full lotus), holding Chin Mudra, while having an internal gaze towards the third eye. That is one form of meditation. There are countless forms of meditation while we are focused intentionally on the breath. Walking meditation, movement mediation, Japa Mala meditationn (repetition of Sacred Mantras), mandala meditation... and many more. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The point of all this, is that meditation is a state of Being, just like Yoga. No one can DO meditation or yoga, they can practice..... Practice... and all will come, as Shri K. Pattabhi Jois said. The concept of karma, the law of cause and effect. There are many incidences in life that present confusion, heart-ache, doubt, despair, sadness, and even depression. But that is just one side of the coin. There is still beauty, peace, hope, inspiration, and LOVE to live for.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Throughout the course of our lives we will witness people we love leave us, sometimes it comes naturally, other times it comes all of a sudden and they are ripped away from us. For those of us that have experienced loss of loved ones, keep your chin up. The sun still rises and sets every day. There are beautiful people in the world that deserve our love and our light. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Today I offer my love and energy to the lives that were taken away. In Memory of the Anniversary of October 12, 2003, Mark Fisher, I send you my love. In Memory of the Anniversary of October 7th-13th, 2006, Michelle Gardner-Quinn, I send you my love. And every day, my father, my hero, I offer you my love. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We have the opportunity to grow stronger and wiser from the experiences we are presented with in this life. One of these is the adherent practice of living TRUTH. This means thinking, saying, and doing what you mean, and mean everything you think, say, and do. This is mighty challenging at times. These many different layers of personal dedications to the practice of Yoga, was layed out by Patanjali, in his Eight-Limbed System of Ashtanga Yoga. The steps or limbs are as follows...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Patanjali's Eight-Limbed System of Yoga:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1.    YAMAS: restraints&lt;br /&gt;       a.    AHIMSA: non-harming&lt;br /&gt;       b.    SATYA: truthfullness&lt;br /&gt;       c.    ASTEYA: non-stealing&lt;br /&gt;       d.    BRAMACHARYA: control on sensual pleasure&lt;br /&gt;       e.    APARIGRAHA: greedlessness&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2.    NIYAMAS: observances&lt;br /&gt;       a.    SAUCHA: cleanliness&lt;br /&gt;       b.    SANTOSA: contentment&lt;br /&gt;       c.    TAPAS: self-discipline&lt;br /&gt;       d.    SVADHYAYA: self-study&lt;br /&gt;       e.    ISVARA PRANIDHANA: self-surrender&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3. Flex the feet, lift flesh from the seat (you may also put a folded blanket under your seat), feeling both sitting bones equally grounded into the floor (blanket).&lt;br /&gt;Exhale: Relax the shoulders back and down, folding forward, pulling with the hands to bring the torso towards the legs.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;                     HOLD FOR (AT LEAST) FIVE BREATHS&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Inhale: Lengthen through the crown, gaze up. We would be holding hands and when there was a wave coming, with utter satisfaction and complete childish joy, we would hop up and over the waves, yelling out ‘up and over’. I was in the ocean the other day in New Jersey, and had this memory come rushing back to me.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Never before did I realize that my childhood memory of singing ‘Up and Over’ would be such a metaphor for life. The ebb and flow of our days is a just that, going up and over the challenging moments, while we enjoy the smooth sailing of our easy-going times. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This metaphor of 'going with the flow' can also be addressed to our asana practice. Let us take full wheel for example. (The posture displayed in the photo above) This heart opener, is a pose of much release and openness for me. I find it most enjoyable when I add variations to it. For example, if you have just practiced Half Wheel/Half Bridge (Setu Bandha Sarvangasana) and Full Wheel (Urdhva Dhanurasana), your back may be pretty open. After the first full wheel in my personal practice, I like to add variations for the next two or more repetitions my body may be requesting. Many times I will lower my head to the floor about 5 times and then lift it back up, as if I am doing a reverse push-up. Then for the final Urdhva Dhanurasana, I like to lift all the way up to stand to release back down from Tadasana or Mountain Pose and land in the full wheel posture. It is such a playful sequence, I highly suggest it. If releasing all the way behind you, is too intimidating right now... try using a wall.. Either walking your hands down the wall to reach the floor, or all the way up from the floor to come to stand. Try it and have fun...If you have questions feel free to let me know. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;All I am offering is to take life a little less seriously. Sure we need to make wise decisions, but we can do so with a playful attitude, like Hanuman, the playful Hindu Monkey God of Devotion. Hold the feet with the fingers on the top of the feet, while the thumbs hold the soles of the feet.&lt;br /&gt;Inhale: Lengthen through the crown of the head.&lt;br /&gt;Exhale: Fold forward, keeping the shoulders broad (back and down) and spine straight. Allow the elbows to press down on the inner thighs to help bring the thighs closer to the floor. One day the chin will come to the floor past the feet.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;HOLD FOR (AT LEAST) FIVE BREATHS&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Inhale: Lift the torso&lt;br /&gt;Exhale: Roll the shoulders back and down, Release.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;              DRISHTI (EYE GAZE): NOSE&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Notes: Try to open the feet up like a book, take a moment to read your soul. “Press the outer edges of your feet together at least 100 miles per hour.” ~Sharon Gannon, Co-founder of Jivamukti Yoga&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Benefits: This posture is a great hip opener. Make sure to keep the spine straight, and not allow it to round. It is a combination of the numbers 1 + 8. or 108. The numbers 108 are considered to be very sacred. In the practice of Japa Mala (the repetition of the name of God/Divine, usually in the form of a mantra, a word or phrase that has transcendental power), the mantra is repeated 108 times, sometimes with the use of malas, or prayer beads. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"Japa is the term used to describe internal or external mantra recitation. When japa begins to bear fruit, the yogi need not continue to chant mantra: the mantra will chant the yogi." (Jivamukti Yoga, pg 226)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The use of mantra is a phenomenal tool in the practice of meditation. When the mind flows in and out of thought, the mantra can be used to keep the focus on the breath and a single-pointed focus--the mantra and the elevated meaning of the words chosen. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you are up for it, I challenge all willing to commit to one week of Japa Mala Meditation. Using a mantra of your choice, English, Sanskrit, or any other language you may wish. The words may be simple... here are a few examples:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;let (on the inhale) go (on the exhale)&lt;br /&gt;let go (on the inhale) let love (on the exhale)&lt;br /&gt;om (inhale) shanti (exhale)&lt;br /&gt;lokah (inhale) samasta (exhale) sukhino (inhale) bhavantu (exhale)&lt;br /&gt;om namah shivaya&lt;br /&gt;om gam ganapataye namah&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The trick is to take your time. Allow yourself plenty of time to breathe. Be present with the breath and mantra. If thoughts come, that is OK, simply try to let them go on the exhale. Becoming non-attached to the thoughts as they come and go.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Japa Mala can be practiced in a seated position, lying down, or even as a walking meditation. If one week is too long of a commitment, try one day. If you have malas, use them. If not, allow 15 minutes to repeat the mantra that you would like. But stick to one mantra per meditation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Open yourself up to limitless possibilities. Let me know how it goes. I will be there with you in spirit. The truth is, when we feel stuck in some aspect of our life, it is then time to shake things up a bit. The art of transitioning is to move through life with equanimity in our minds, openness in our heart, and an undying sense of adventure. In order to do so gracefully, the great Sage Patanjali offers this Yoga Sutra:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;"&gt;yogash chitta vritti nirodhah (YS 1.2)&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;"Yoga is the restriction of the fluctuations of the mind".... The art of transition I believe comes in when we bring our worries and fears down from our mind, and transform that energy into love, moving forward fearlessly.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I am deeply honored to have shared so much love and practice in this beautiful state of Vermont. For all the students who have diligently practiced the art of Yoga, thank you. Life has the opportunity to present us with smooth sailing as well as the endlessly seeming tumultuous waves that will knock us down with no air to breath. Tumbling under the waves gasping for the tiniest breathe of air. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In asana practice we learn to ground down to lift up. Rooting into the earth so we may balance, firmly planted. As we learn to do this we may fall down. We fall down so we may gain the strength and endurance necessary to get back up. Life’s dance does the same to us. There are moments that we are firmly grounded and can dance effortlessly through the stars. Other times, we fall, even hurting ourselves along the way. But life would not present us with a challenge we could not overcome. We fall so we may get up again, stronger and wiser for our next adventure.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The time has come. It is official. I am leaving the great and wondrous state of Vermont at the end of this summer. It has been a phenomenal adventure, and I am endlessly grateful for all the experiences that have been bestowed upon me over these lovely six years.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The wind blows me in another direction. As much as it pains me to leave a community I have had a lovely love affair with, I know I will return. I am heading back to my family farm in New Jersey for one year before I head out to graduate school. I am needed there. And family comes first. Selflessly offering my time and energy to those who have dedicated their life to my growth and survival. I humbly bow down and offer the same in return.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Keep your eyes peeled for updated yoga classes around the Northern Jersey area. Following a battle with ailing health, he passed today (May 18, 2009) afternoon India time. He was 94.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Guruji, as he was fondly know all over the world, was one of Sri T Krishnamacharya's earlier students in Mysore. He has been instrumental in spreading one of Krishnamcharya's methods, which is now popularly known as Astanga Vinyasa Yoga. He has been one of the most influential teachers of our time. It is our great previlege to have shared this earth with a master of his caliber.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Krishnamacharya Healing &amp;amp; Yoga Foundation, as well as Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram, will be organizing a prayer in his honor on the 19 May 2009, at 6:00 pm at the premises of the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram. We invite everyone to come and participate.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;TKV Desikachar, who is in Tennessee currently, will organize a prayer meeting there with his group of students.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;At this time of loss, all of us yogis have the opportunity to reflect on the art of lineage. Who are are teachers? Who are their teachers? Can we trace back our teachers' teachers all the way back to the original source??? Practice it. Challenge yourself to go back... How far back can you go in your studies? In your teachings? Honoring the Blessed source of which our practices of Yoga emerged from... Go. Let love. Once tuned, the practitioner can enjoy yoga: automatic harmony with the Divine, pulsating in the ocean of bliss.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;•    “Chanting is the heart practice of Yoga. When we are in love, our hearts are constantly calling out the name of our lover. Chanting is that calling.” ~Krishna Das&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;•    OM: is the original and most powerful mantra. It is the primal sound of the Divine in its essential manifestation. In the beginning was the word and the word was God (OM).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;•    The sound of OM itself creates a vibration in the skull and sinuses that is said to be very healing.
